It might seem counterintuitive for a producer to detach themselves from one of the planet’s most thriving music scenes, but in the case of Matthew Walker, AKA Julio Bashmore, that’s exactly what he did growing up in bass music hotbed, Bristol. Julio’s first love is house music and operating just on the peripheries of the city’s scene has allowed him to quietly cultivate a take on the genre unlike any other. This is most definitely music for 2011, using a sound palette similar to other neon-clad bass superstars like Night Slugs and Ten Thousand Yen; however Julio’s groove is much more focussed on house and boogie, sounding a little like Onra meets People’s Potential Unlimited in the Numbers and Kode 9’s bass factory. Side A contains two massive dancefloor destroyers, with both «Battle For Middle You» and «Ask Yourself» languishing in glisteningly euphoric hooks accompanied by tough, skitting 4/4 beats (heavy on the 808 sub kicks too – reach for the bass bins!). The B side is much more restrained and boogie influenced; early evening bubblers for your clued up club kids and forward-thinking musical soirees. Most recommended.
